comment Is there an equivalent prestige dialect of German in the same way Received Pronunciation is to English? If so, how did it come about?
@Samuel A very nice example! (even though he does swallow his 'G's) :P

comment What's the politically correct way to say “mentally retarded” in German?
Geschädigt sounds much more like injured. A nice reference for this answer would be: Allgemeiner Behindertenverband e.V.

comment Wann spricht man „ie“ als Diphthong aus?
Man muss hier darauf achten, das Diphthong nicht mit dem Hiat zu verwechseln. Ein Diphthong hat man nur dann, wenn der Doppellaut innerhalb einer Silbe ist. Also, Mie-te, aber nicht Kar-ri-e-re.

comment “Mandaliet” in den Carmina Burana
I read that too, and asked myself if the person on usenet didn't bother to check what "min geselle chumet niet" means ;)

comment Neue Rechtschreibung: What has changed?
I'd gladly add them, but unfortunately I don't know what rules you're talking about. :-) As for the case of setting a comma when using "zu", this was only added in 2006. For a detailed discussion, see Neuerungen der deutschen Rechtschreibreform von 1996 (subsection Änderungen beim Infinitiv mit zu)
