Norwegisch ist meine Muttersprache, aber ich habe seit dem ersten September 2010 versucht, Deutsch zu lernen.

And as for the abstract verbs: Yes, it cannot be justified by direction, and hence my question. It would be a great help for learners if there was some underlying principle here; even if it was complicated.

About the movement verbs: I think the rule correctly predicts the answer for your first two examples: "Wo (not wohin) steigt er ab? Im Hotel!" and "Wo ist das Pferd gebunden? Auf der Wiese, aber an einen Baum."

comment What is the appropriate usage of “Gemütlichkeit”?
Are there dialectical differences in the usage of the word? I have learned German in Munich and to me "Gemütlichkeit" does not mean "laziness" at all.

comment What's the quality of clip2go?
This question is a little vague for this site. Try specifying exactly what you want opinions of. For example: "Does the pronunciation sound native?" or "Are the texts written in colloquial or formal language? Are the texts correct?"

comment How to write an “ß”?
If "Unterlänge" means the part of a letter which extends below the line, you use "descender" in English.

@mbx: You're right "downstroke" is not used specifically for the first stroke of a word or letter. I'll correct it. Thanks for the comment!

comment W → V, V → F. Why do German speakers wrongly transpose rather than shift when speaking English?
+1 Exactly! Germans are eager to show off that they have learned the sound in "wet", but since "v" and "w" are overlapping in their own language they sometimes overdo it.

comment How useful for a complete beginner is the FSI German courses?
@Robert: Find some German audio samples and record yourself repeating the audio. You can hear surprisingly many pronunciation errors when playing your recording which you can't hear if you're speaking at the same time. You can correct these errors before actually approaching a native speaker.
