comment How to negate “heimkommen”?
So we all agree on the german. Any native english speaker here who can shed some light on how to interprete the meaning of "not until" here?

I'd rather translate that as "Ich komme heute nicht vor halb acht nach Hause" (and yes, you are right about the north/south thing - I'm from the northern part and we seldom say "heim").

comment How is the English Miss written in German?
That used to be the spelling, but we got rid of 'ß' in cases where it came after a short vowel in the "Rechtschreibrefrom" about 15 years ago. (Examples: "daß" became "dass", whereas "saß" is still spelled with 'ß').

comment Pronunciation of “gucken”
Even here in northern germany, we write it as "gucken" but pronounce it like "kucken". If I remember right, the spelling "kucken" was added to the Duden about 20 or 30 years ago - noone I know uses it and it is seen as a bad spelling by most.

comment Is there anything like a dime?
I haven't heard Groschen since my grandfather died 20 years ago. It's no longer in use, and probably a lot of younger germans won't understand it nowadays.
