I develop solutions to enable groups of people to explore and develop ideas together.

Currently I work with a mixture of WPF/C#, PHP, and CocoaTouch.

comment Is it acceptable to omit umlauts and put an extra 'e' instead?
Most character encodings support these characters (which are part of latin-1), including Windows-1252 which used by default in the legacy components of Windows in English and some other Western languages, and Mac-Roman which is the equivilent on legacy version of Mac OS, as well as UTF-8 and ISO/IEC 8859. Many modern email clients format messages as HTML and as such should encode the these symbols using html entities.

@mbx. Thanks for the suggestion. I live in a block of flats with a communinal dish that can't pick up German TV. Do you know any sites that stream German tv shows that are accessible in the uk?

@ladybug I watched a few films where I've understood the odd scene, and I've failed to understand big chunks. I found watching film with subtitles once lets me work out what the story and each scene is about, then it's easier to go back and watch without subtitles.

+1 I really enjoyed Die Architekten. It gave me an amazing insight into the struggles people doing creative jobs people must have faced under the DDR. The liner notes in the UK DVD provide an talk about the difficulties the DEFA had getting the film into production (before the Wall fell) which mirror the themes in the movie.

@ladybug do you know if it is available with English subtitles? The version I've found on amazon.de doesn't list any.

@ladybug I'm not opposed to dialect. I just thought it would probably teach learners phrases that couldn't use in post situations. What do you think?

I'd never heard of this. It sounds like a really interesting film, but I can't find a copy with english subtitles.

You do need to find someone to be at the other end of the call though ;-)

Are using the babbel website? I've been using the babbel iPhone app which seems to be good for developing vocab around specific topics.

comment What is the correct way to denote a quotation in German?
@Alenanno Double quotes are considered standard english, although single quotes would be understood. The single quote is tends be used if you quoting a quote, eg he said "the newspaper claimed 'the sky is blue.' "

comment What is the German equivalent of “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”?
It does, I was just curious is there was a phrase containing these characters that is regularly used in German speaking countries when looking at a font selection.

That phrase doesn't have a ß which you would probably want if using it to assess a font.
