Any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a majority of one.

Henry David Thoreau

Note: I am on a long break from GL&U. I may drop in to fix up some old answer of mine or to respond to a request for clarification.

comment What is the appropriate usage of “Gemütlichkeit”?
Have a look at the Gemütlichkeit article on English Wikipedia. Would you like to expand on your Answer using that article as a reference? "Relaxed" or "laid back" do not cover it. As an adjective, gemütlich describes a person who is equal parts "good-natured" and "in a good mood", with "sociable", "genial", "jovial" and "unhurried" thrown in. Gemütlichkeit describes the quality of the social setting that arises when a number of gemütlich people come together. The workplace is never appropriate for an outbreak of Gemütlichkeit.

comment I have allowed (smth) vs. I have been allowed (smth)
Both Em1 and Toscho are right. In addition, people tend to avoid using the past participle gedurft because of the phrase seine Notdurft verrichten (to relieve oneself) which is considered an unpleasant association to evoke.

comment Doch vs. noch/gar?
"pretzel logic" is a figure of speech meaning "convoluted logic", Steely Dan merely appropriated it for the title of an album :)

comment Was ist eine angemessene Übersetzung für “shitstorm”?
Downvote ist meiner, da diese Antwort nur die Aussage einer früheren Antwort wiederholt, aber dieses Mal ohne Beleg. Im übrigen habe ich noch nie in einem Thread so viele Downvotes vergeben wie hier, es sind sage und schreibe sechs Stück. Einzig der Antwort von splattne gab ich ein Upvote.
