comment For cars, what verb has to be used? Stehen oder liegen?
@Matthias exactly what I wanted to add. „Mein Auto ist liegen geblieben“ or „liegen bleiben“ in general is also used for that matter. I would only use it if I had engine problems that stopped me from driving on or if I had a flat tire along the way, though.

comment Demographics and geographic use of “oder wat” (alternatively “oder Watt”)
I don't have enough evidential background beside my personal experience, therefore only as a comment: It is used very much in the Ruhrgebiet area in the west of Germany. It's mainly used in situations where colloquial language is okay, though, but in those situations I have heard it across a wide demographic range from people at the age of 10 up to around 60.

I should have mentioned that what I was writing about was how it’s handled in Germany …

comment What would be some good exercises with a language partner for a beginner?
@Deve He also asked about “any advice to get going”. My main advice was to use school books. But for learning on his own, movies and the other opportunities I recommended might be interesting for him, as well.

@StephaneRolland I added some additional pieces of information. Especially the Duden link should help you.
