What does “das wäre aber nicht nötig gewesen” mean? Good answer. I'd like to add that people often use this phrase even if they did expect you to bring a present. |

Can “anscheinend” mean “apparently” in the surprised sense? @Hendrik: I disagree. "Offenbar", and more so "offensichtlich", can mean "obviously". But here it serves to slightly decline responsibility for correctness. The speaker expresses that his supposition is not based on his original thought, but that he has to take someone else's word for it. |

Is there a non-regional German expression for the Swabian term “Gschmäckle”? "Das ist oberfaul." is a lot stronger than "Das hat ein Gschmäckle.". |

Is “to make one sigh” properly translated as “seufzen machen” or as “machen seufzen?” "Seufzen lassen" is standard in my opinion. "Seufzen machen" sounds awkward and old-fashioned, but that might fit your purpose. |

What are informal ways to say “good bye”? Bei so vielen Varianten von "Tschüss" wundert es mich schon, das "Tschüssikowski" nicht dabei ist. ;-) |

Could a “Kerl” be female? "Typ" is another word that denotes a man when used without an adjective, while "Sie ist ein toller Typ" is common. |

Höfliche Anrede mit zweiter Person Plural: »Ihr solltet zugeben, dass Ihr ganz einfach Angst habt.« Interessant wäre, ob wir wirklich unseren König mit "Ihr" anreden würden, wenn wir eine Monarchie wie andere europäische Länder hätten. |
