comment What is an accurate translation for “I just wanted to run this by you…”?
@Em1 While your suggestion has the correct meaning, it doesn't seem to me to catch the subtlety of the English phrase. Perhaps there is no good substitute for the construction ".. run ... by ..".

comment Suggestions on preparing for the Zertifikat Deutsch (internationally accepted certificate in German) exam
@TomAu That's the general idea, and is especially true for the letter writing component. For the other components a broad 'basic knowledge' will go far, allowing you to better understand the reading comprehension and what people are saying when trying to listen. When responding yourself, the examiners are more lenient, although it never hurts to only use constructions and words with which you are very comfortable. As an example, I added "-chen" to any word (where appropriate, with change in umlauts if required) of which the genus wasn't immediately clear to me.

As a word, I would suggest 'clarifiable'. Oder verstehe ich was falsch?

Perhaps I misunderstand something, but shouldn't it be 'dass' instead of 'das' in the first suggestion with 'beibringen'?

comment How to express “silly” in German?
@Cos Perhaps you'd like to clarify what you're trying to say here, as it seems quite offensive and nonesensical to me at the moment.

@pha Curious! The sarcasm I can understand, but how could it be taken affectionately??

comment A fact following from an argument: “folgt von” or “folgt aus”?
I'm just (re)writing an informal Skript for a Vorlesung. The original has a multi-line series of equations, and before them has "Using the divergence theorem we compute" and at the end has "Note that the last equation follows from the argument of Lemma XX combined with standard estimates, as can be for example found in [XX,Lemma XX]." I don't know if this really helps however :).

comment A fact following from an argument: “folgt von” or “folgt aus”?
Thanks for the answer Hendrik. I'll leave the mistakes in my original post since it perhaps gives better context to learners. It would be great if you could think of a 'standard' reformulation for the second part of the question.

@Jan Thank you very much. This kind of implied meaning is very hard to learn. You're a champ!

comment When should you use “erst” rather than “nur”?
@Jan I would have always said "Ich war nur einmal in Berlin". Should I take it from your answer that this is incorrect?
