Apr 6, 2017 at 0:05 comment added Janka Perfekt is a past tense in German, unlike in English, where Perfect is a present tense. So in German, you are free to choose. Usually, people use Präteritum (German simple past tense) only in writing. When doing a presentation, you can switch between both just to vary your speech a bit.
