For example:

I renounced playing in order to succeed.

He gave up on playing in order to succeed.

I know also that "verzichten auf" can mean "to renounce" Is there any other verb that can replace "verzichten auf" ?

I would suggest using aufgeben or entsagen to substitute for verzichten.

Ich gab das Spielen auf, um Erfolg zu haben.
Ich entsagte dem Spielen, um Erfolg zu haben.

Especially entsagen is quite a bit stronger a statement than verzichten.

Sein ließ ich das viele Spiel,
damit's den anderen gefiel.

I stopped playing/gaming (excessively)
to please them all. (i.e. succeed)

Never stop playing!
