Warum haben Deutsche einen "Vogel", wenn sie ein wenig verrückt sind?

Ich glaube, das nächste Äquivalent auf Englisch wäre das Adjektiv 'cuckoo' (Kuckuck). 'He's cuckoo' bedeutet, dass er etwas bekloppt ist.
