Pronominaladverbien / Präpositionaladverbien: Words like darüber, darauf, darin, daran / worüber, woran, worauf, worin / hierbei, hieran, hierauf, etc. This type of adverbs is commonly used in German. They consist of prepositions prefixed with da-/dar-, wo-/wor-, or hier-. While functioning as adverbs, they also have a pronominal function, as they can stand alone in a clause, pointing to an object phrase or a statement that they refer to. Pronominal adverbs exist in English, too: thereof, wherein, hereby, etc., but they are not as numerous and commonly used as in German.
