Sep 20 at 9:36 comment added Janka No. Glauben an+<akk> is simply a phrasal verb as English to believe in+<obj>. That preposition an (or in in English) isn't part of an adverbial but part of a prepositional object. In German, that particular phrasal verb wants its prepositional object to have an accusative noun phrase. It has to be learned with the phrasal verb.
Sep 20 at 3:33 comment converted from answer Old Grandma Still not clear, why 'glauben an' takes accusative "dich". Isn't it that with certain prepositions you use accusative if there's movement, a change of location or change of state? I can't see both here.

May 31, 2017 at 14:02 comment added Em1 You can get some hints from dictionaries. E.g. Wiktionary: to believe (to think someone/something exists = an + acc.; to think something someone says is correct = dat.) — The German version is even more clear: »jemandem glauben« (Dativ), »an jemanden (/etwas) glauben« (Akkusativ)
